DETAILS: The designation “53-65A” refers to a 53 cm diameter torpedo in the 53-65 wake-homing family, with the “A” suffix denoting an advanced or adapted variant. It was engineered to be compatible with the titanium-hull, high-speed Alfa-class, and featured reinforced structure and improved wake sensor reliability. Like its predecessors, it used a kerosene-oxidizer thermal propulsion system and a passive wake-homing seeker, optimized to exploit the turbulence trail of surface vessels. It carried a large high-explosive warhead and lacked wire or acoustic homing, relying solely on wake detection for terminal guidance.
